EU Airlines Seek Rollback of Green Rules Amid Fuel Crisis
Airline chiefs in Brussels seek a rollback of EU green fuel mandates. Rising oil prices and Middle East conflict have increased operational costs for carriers.
European airline executives are convening in Brussels this Thursday to address a mounting set of challenges, ranging from geopolitical instability in the Middle East to the rising costs associated with the European Union's environmental regulations. With crude oil prices surpassing $100 per barrel, industry leaders are expected to push for a delay or reduction in mandates for synthetic sustainable jet fuel (eSAF) that are currently slated to take effect in 2030.
The pushback comes as major carriers, including AIR FRANCE-KLM, Ryanair Holdings plc, easyJet plc, Lufthansa, and British Airways owner IAG, express concerns over a competitive disadvantage. They argue that the high cost and limited supply of green fuels place an unfair burden on European operators compared to their counterparts in Asia and the Middle East.
