European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has confirmed that the European Union will find a path to provide the promised 90 billion euro ($104.2 billion) loan to Ukraine despite the persistent resistance from Hungary. Speaking in Brussels after a summit where leaders failed to convince Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to lift his blockade, von der Leyen expressed confidence in the bloc's ability to fulfill its financial commitments. > "We will deliver one way or the other," von der Leyen stated during a press conference early Friday. European Council President Antonio Costa condemned the obstruction, describing the resistance as unacceptable and emphasizing that the council would not be swayed by such tactics. > "A deal is a deal, we need to honour our word." > "And no one can blackmail the European Council," Costa added. The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, was equally critical, labeling the veto an unprecedented act of disloyalty that would leave a lasting mark on the union. Merz confirmed that the European Commission has been directed to explore alternative avenues for the payout to ensure the support reaches its destination regardless of the internal deadlock. > "This is a serious violation of the principle of loyalty of the member states amongst each other, and it damages the standing of the European Union."
