Eskom Launches New Renewable Energy Unit for Clean Power
South African utility Eskom has launched Eskom Green to develop utility-scale renewable energy projects as part of its long-term pivot away from coal. The unit aims to provide 6 gigawatts of carbon-free electricity by 2030 for energy-intensive sectors.
Eskom launched a renewable energy unit on Tuesday to develop 32 gigawatts of clean power capacity by 2040. The initiative transitions the state-owned provider away from its coal-heavy generation fleet that currently supplies the bulk of the nation's electricity. This strategic pivot aims to secure long-term industrial demand by offering carbon-free contracts to energy-intensive mining and manufacturing sectors.
