The state-owned rail operator of Germany, Deutsche Bahn, has seen its net loss widen to 2.3 billion euros ($2.6 billion) over the past year. According to sources familiar with the company's confidential financial results, the deficit was primarily driven by ongoing issues within its long-distance transport division. Persistent delays affecting the carrier's flagship white ICE trains necessitated a 1.4 billion euro write-down of the division's valuation. While the company reported an operating profit (EBIT) of 300 million euros, the net loss represents a significant increase from the 1.8 billion euro loss recorded in 2024. The railway provider is currently engaged in an extensive, multi-billion-euro infrastructure overhaul aimed at modernizing its aging network. This project involves the total closure of major rail sections for months at a time, which has negatively impacted the train subsidiary's performance. The company has been forced to pay substantial compensation to passengers for frequent delays and cancellations. Additionally, the subsidiary is bracing for slower growth as travelers increasingly favor cars or air travel to avoid the unreliability of the rail system. A spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn declined to comment on the figures ahead of the official results press conference scheduled for March 27.
