Danish funds back resolution to end Nordea Arctic oil loans
Danish funds Akademiker and Sampension support a resolution for Nordea to end Arctic oil financing. The move aims to align the bank with its regional peers.
Major institutional investors in Denmark are backing a shareholder resolution that challenges NORDEA BANK ABP over its continued financing of fossil fuel expansion. Pension funds Akademiker and Sampension have confirmed their support for a motion ahead of the bank's annual general meeting, calling for an end to all lending for companies increasing oil and gas production in the Arctic region.
The activist motion follows a period of heightened energy market volatility and recent announcements from Norway regarding plans for expanded offshore drilling in its Arctic territories. The resolution specifically highlights exposure to major energy firms such as EQUINOR ASA and AKER BP ASA, as well as Var Energi. Proponents argue that the bank should align its policies with regional peers, including DANSKE BANK A/S and Swedbank AB (publ), which have already moved to restrict lending for activities north of the Arctic Circle.
