Bank shares fall as UK mortgage lender MFS collapses
UK lender MFS entered administration following reports of a 930 million pound collateral shortfall. Shares in major banks fell as credit risks weighed.
The collapse of a niche mortgage lender in the United Kingdom has triggered a selloff across major financial hubs, raising alarms over hidden risks in the private credit market. Market Financial Solutions Ltd (MFS), a London-based firm specializing in property-backed bridging loans, has entered administration following allegations of financial irregularities and a significant collateral shortfall.
The impact was felt immediately in the United States, where shares of Jefferies Financial Group Inc. dropped 10.7% on Friday. Investors are increasingly wary of the bank's exposure to MFS, especially following its involvement with other recent credit failures. Barclays PLC also saw its stock price fall by 4.2%, while Banco Santander, S.A. declined nearly 5%.
