Chinese banks see surge in January lending while missing market forecasts

Chinese banks extended 4.71 trillion yuan in new loans in January, missing forecasts despite a seasonal jump. Weak credit demand remains a drag on the economy.

Chinese banks issued 4.71 trillion yuan in new yuan loans in January, a figure that represents a sharp increase from December but falls short of both analyst forecasts and the level recorded a year earlier in China CNCN. According to data released by the People's Bank of China on February 13, 2026, the total missed the approximately 5.0 trillion yuan expected by analysts and was lower than the 5.13 trillion yuan issued in January 2025.
