Hongqi eyes Stellantis Spain plant for European expansion
The Chinese luxury brand is in talks to build vehicles in Spain through a partnership with Leapmotor. This move aims to accelerate its European market growth.
The historic Chinese luxury brand Hongqi, traditionally associated with the leadership of China, is reportedly in negotiations with Stellantis to manufacture vehicles at a facility in Spain. This move marks a significant step in the brand's efforts to establish a manufacturing presence within Western Europe and bypass the high costs associated with building new infrastructure from the ground up.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the state-owned parent company FAW is conducting these discussions through ZHEJIANG LEAPMOTOR TECHNOL-H, an electric vehicle specialist in which both FAW and Stellantis hold investment stakes. The collaboration aims to leverage existing networks to accelerate the introduction of more than a dozen electric and hybrid models to the European market by 2028.
