China Seeks Unrestricted Access to Strait of Hormuz
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that China wants the Strait of Hormuz reopened without tolls or military control. Following summit talks in Beijing, the U.S. remains confident that China will act to limit material support for Iran to help end the ongoing regional conflict.
United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said China wants the Strait of Hormuz reopened without tolls or military restrictions. The demand follows a Beijing summit where officials sought to restore a route carrying 20% of global energy supplies. The closure has created the largest-ever disruption to global energy shipments.
Greer told Bloomberg News on Friday that Beijing is acting pragmatically to avoid being on the wrong side of the conflict. He noted that Chinese officials at the summit prioritized open shipping lanes over military control.
