China domestic car sales fell 21.6% to 1.4 million vehicles in April, marking a seventh consecutive monthly decline. Exports surged as automakers targeted overseas markets, with EV and PHEV shipments rising 111.8%. The divergence between domestic weakness and export strength signals a structural pivot toward premium, overseas-focused production.
### Export Strength Offsets Domestic Slump While local demand faltered, Chinese automakers successfully pivoted to international markets. Overall car exports rose 80.2% last month, with electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) leading the expansion. China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data released on Monday showed that global demand for these vehicles remains robust.
