Trump and Xi Attend Beijing Banquet to Reset Relations
Trump and Xi attended a Beijing banquet featuring Huaiyang cuisine and beef ribs. The menu signaled a diplomatic reset through symbolic culinary choices.
China hosted United States President Donald Trump for a state banquet on May 14 to signal a diplomatic reset. The event utilized Huaiyang cuisine, a staple of Chinese diplomacy since the 1949 founding banquet, to bridge political divides. The menu selection reflected both traditional Chinese culinary practice and accommodation of the visiting leader's preferences.
Menu planners added Beijing roast duck and beef ribs to the traditional selection of mild Huaiyang flavors. This adjustment catered to Trump's preference for steak during the Thursday banquet. The dessert menu included tiramisu, fruit, ice cream, and a trumpet-shell pastry for U.S. guests.
