China faces ongoing deflationary pressure as consumer price growth cools in January

China consumer inflation slowed to 0.2 percent in January as producer price deflation continued. Persistent supply imbalances remain a key hurdle for recovery.

Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday revealed that consumer inflation in China CNCN slowed to a 0.2% year-on-year increase in January. Meanwhile, producer prices fell by 1.4% year-on-year, highlighting a persistent trend of producer-price (PPI) deflation. These figures from the NBS underscore weak domestic demand, complicating efforts by Beijing (Chinese government) to rebalance supply and demand and boost national consumption.
