China Stresses Need for US Dialogue Before Summit
Foreign Minister Wang Yi says US-China dialogue is vital to avoid global conflict. Preparations continue for a potential summit between the two leaders.
China has emphasized that diplomatic engagement with the United States is vital to preventing global miscalculations that could lead to widespread harm. Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the National People's Congress in Beijing, Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that a lack of communication would inevitably result in misunderstandings and confrontation. > Failure to engage between the two nations would only lead to misunderstandings and misjudgements, escalating toward confrontation and harming the world. The diplomatic push comes as preparations are underway for a potential summit between President Xi Jinping and Donald Trump later this month. This high-level dialogue is set against a backdrop of significant global tension, including the ongoing war involving Israel and Iran, which has reportedly resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Beijing's strategic partnerships are also under pressure following the capture of President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela in January. Wang Yi appeared to criticize the current American foreign policy approach, referred to as the "Donroe Doctrine," which asserts a sphere of influence in the Americas and challenges Chinese global infrastructure initiatives. > The agenda for high-level exchanges is on the table. Addressing regional stability, Wang Yi questioned whether Asia would remain peaceful if China adopted the tactics of other major powers that seek to establish spheres of influence or shift problems onto their neighbors. > If China, like some traditional major powers, was keen on carving out spheres of influence in its neighbourhood, stoking bloc confrontation, or even shifting problems onto its neighbours, would Asia still be as stable as it is today? The Trump administration has also issued threats against Colombia and Mexico, while suggesting that the government of Cuba is nearing collapse. These developments have left many nations in Latin America questioning how their ties with Beijing might protect them under increasing pressure. > What is required is for both sides to make thorough preparations to create a conducive environment to manage existing differences.
