China Urges Hog Capacity Cuts to Stabilize Market Prices
Minister Han Jun urged the hog industry to reduce capacity and cull aging sows. The move aims to stabilize prices and address current oversupply in the sector.
The Agriculture Minister of China, Han Jun, has urged the domestic hog industry to meet production-capacity reduction targets and scale the breeding sow herd to a more sustainable level. According to a statement released by the ministry late on Friday, the directive comes as hog prices remain at low levels due to significant overcapacity and weak consumer demand.
Han Jun met with industry representatives to coordinate the advancement of capacity regulation and promote industry upgrades aimed at reducing cyclical volatility. As the nation responsible for half of the world's pig population, the massive hog sector in China is currently struggling with high production capacity and an inertia-driven increase in market supply.
