Chile is set to break with precedent by opening its annual global copper gathering with a full day of panels devoted to lithium. This strategic shift signals the country's intent to diversify its economy beyond the red metal that has been its primary driver for decades. The inaugural World Lithium Conference, organized by consultancy CRU and the International Lithium Association, will launch the event known as CESCO Week in Santiago. After a period of stagnation, lithium prices have recovered to two-year highs as geopolitical instability in the Middle East fuels interest in metals essential for electric vehicle batteries. Market conditions are tightening further due to the closure of a major mine in China, an export ban in Zimbabwe, and declining global stocks of lithium carbonate. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the nation holds 13 million tons of lithium resources, the third-largest globally after Argentina and Bolivia. The administration of President José Antonio Kast is currently evaluating interest from five major mining firms, including RIO TINTO LTD, which are seeking development rights as the state offers partnerships for its vast mineral deposits. Ignacio Mehech, CEO of CLEANTECH LITHIUM PLC, noted that the industry is looking for the new government to streamline the contracting process initiated in 2023. > "The lithium strategy rolled out in 2023 was a pretty good direction, so what we are hoping is the new government takes it up and makes it simpler and faster to award new contracts." CleanTech Lithium has already secured a production license but continues to seek environmental permits for a $750 million project at the Salar de Laguna Verde. Global momentum for the metal remains high, with CRU reporting that the number of active lithium mines worldwide has doubled over the last four years and is expected to reach nearly 80 by 2026. Martin Jackson, CRU’s head of lithium and battery materials, emphasized that the technology remains the most viable option for energy density. > "Lithium will remain the most competitive technology for its energy density for many years to come." Financial institutions are also projecting a bullish outlook. Macquarie estimates that global demand will rise by more than 20% annually through 2030, driven largely by the energy storage sector even as electric vehicle growth slows. Asad Farid, director of the strategic materials equity fund at J. Safra Sarasin Sustainable Asset Management, pointed to current supply delays as a catalyst for price growth. > "Current market tightness suggests a compelling setup for sustained upward price momentum as demand inevitably outstrips delayed supply." This expansion into lithium comes as geopolitical tensions between the United States and China impact resource-rich regions like South America. China has significantly increased its dominance in the sector, now representing nearly 90% of global demand, while the Guangzhou Futures Exchange has become a key industry benchmark. Chile has previously navigated these diplomatic complexities, such as when it pursued a fiber-optic link to Hong Kong despite American opposition. WEALTH MINERALS LTD is currently in talks with India through the state-run Coal India Limited regarding a potential joint venture. Marcelo Awad, a veteran mining advisor for Wealth Minerals, suggested that the current political environment in the U.S. might influence investment decisions. > "With the current approach of President Trump, perhaps we have to think twice if we go for Chinese investors." Despite these external pressures, many in the Chilean mining sector argue for a policy of neutrality to maintain essential global trade relationships. Mehech noted that the country must find a way to balance its ties with all major partners. > "The biggest discussion here right now is how Chile will manage to keep good relations with every country, including China."
