Chicago Federal Reserve President Austan Goolsbee stated on Tuesday that interest rate reductions in the United States may be delayed until 2027, depending on the persistence of elevated energy prices. During an appearance at the Semafor World Economy conference, Goolsbee highlighted the central bank's primary focus on controlling price growth.

The central bank official emphasized that the Federal Reserve remains committed to its mandate of price stability.

Its our job to get inflation back to 2%.

Prior to recent geopolitical developments involving Iran, Goolsbee had anticipated that inflationary pressures from tariffs would ease this year, potentially allowing for rate cuts. However, the sustained high levels of Brent Crude Oil and West Texas Oil have prompted a reassessment of that timeline.

The Fed official noted that if inflation does not show a definitive decline, the possibility of easing policy in 2026 becomes increasingly unlikely.

I thought there could be even multiple rate cuts in 2026; the longer this goes where we never got to see the decrease in inflation (and) if the inflation stays up, realistically, I think that starts pushing it out of 26.
