Canada reports widened budget deficit of 26.39 billion dollars for first eight months of fiscal year

The Canadian government recorded a 26.39 billion dollar deficit through the first eight months of the fiscal year as spending growth outpaced revenue gains.

The Government of Canada CACA recorded a budget deficit of C$26.39 billion during the first eight months of the 2025/26 fiscal year. This total represents a deterioration in the fiscal balance compared to the C$22.72 billion deficit recorded for the same period one year earlier. According to figures released by the Finance ministry (Canada) and reported by Reuters, the widening of the deficit was driven by government expenditures growing at a faster rate than revenues. The exchange rate cited in the fiscal report was 1.3524 Canadian dollars to one U.S. dollar.
