Retailers Urge UK Government Action on Rising War Costs
UK retailers urge the government to cut energy levies as the Iran war raises costs. Support is now needed to prevent further price hikes for British consumers.
The United Kingdom retail sector urged the government on Wednesday morning to cut business costs as the war in Iran drives up energy and shipping prices. These costs compound existing pressures from higher employer taxes, rising wages, and new packaging levies. The British Retail Consortium warned that without support, keeping a lid on rising consumer prices will be harder.
The BRC stated the conflict is inflating production and distribution expenses across the retail sector. These costs arrive alongside new regulatory burdens, including guaranteed hours provisions and proposed food line reformulations.
