British Carmakers Seek Clarity on Made in EU Rules
The SMMT is calling for urgent clarification on whether British vehicles will maintain Made in EU status. This move aims to protect 80 billion euros in trade.
The automotive sector in the United Kingdom is seeking immediate clarity regarding its trade status under the European Commission’s Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA). The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) warned that current ambiguity over whether British-made goods will be classified as "Made in EU" risks stalling vital industry investments. This uncertainty comes as European and British manufacturers face growing pressure from low-cost electric vehicle imports originating in China.
SMMT Chief Executive Michael Hawes noted that the regulation was designed to enhance European competitiveness against distant, low-cost economies rather than penalize regional trade partners.
