Belgium to Sell 20 Percent Stake in Belfius Bank
The Belgian government intends to sell a 20 percent stake in Belfius for approximately 2 billion euros to reduce national debt and fund defense spending. Finance Minister Jan Jambon told lawmakers that a private placement is preferred over an IPO to attract an experienced investor amid market volatility.
Belgium plans to sell a 20% stake in Belfius bank through a private placement valued at approximately €2B ($2.3B). Finance Minister Jan Jambon announced the sale to a parliamentary committee on Tuesday. The transaction aims to reduce national debt and fund increased defense spending while avoiding the volatility of a public offering.
### Shifting from IPO to Private Placement The government opted for a private placement over an IPO to ensure a faster, more stable execution. Jambon told lawmakers that an IPO is a longer, more complex process that remains highly dependent on current market instability. Financial markets currently value Belfius at about €10 billion.
