Bailey says inflation above target is currently justified
Governor Andrew Bailey stated that allowing inflation to exceed the 2% target is justified due to economic uncertainty from the Iran war. While the BoE remains cautious about raising rates, Bailey warned that tolerance for higher inflation would weaken if second-round effects emerge.
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said the central bank will tolerate inflation above its 2% target. The Monetary Policy Committee held interest rates steady on April 30. Investors now face a diverging policy path between the United Kingdom and the Eurozone.
Bailey told a conference in Iceland that uncertainty regarding the Iran war and weak growth justify the current stance. He noted that tolerance for higher prices would fade if second-round effects emerge.
