Bank of England Tests AI Risks to the Financial System
The Bank of England is testing how AI impacts market stability. Testing focuses on herding behaviour while lawmakers urge faster regulation of major tech firms.
The Bank of England has confirmed it is actively conducting scenario analysis and simulations to identify potential risks posed by artificial intelligence to the financial stability of the United Kingdom. In a letter to lawmakers, the central bank clarified its position, rejecting suggestions that it has taken a passive stance on the technology's integration into the financial sector. Officials emphasized that they are closely monitoring how AI investment and adoption are transforming the broader financial system.
BoE Deputy Governor for Financial Stability Sarah Breeden explained that the institution is collaborating with international counterparts to determine how AI-driven agents might influence trading behaviors. A primary concern for regulators is the potential for automated systems to trigger synchronized market movements that could worsen volatility during periods of instability.
