Bangladesh Seeks New IMF Loan Deal to Replace Current Pact
The Bangladeshi government has requested a new financial arrangement from the IMF to better reflect current economic realities and political shifts. Officials stated that while they remain committed to reform, the existing framework requires recalibration to address persistent inflation and external shocks.
Bangladesh requested a new lending arrangement from the IMF on Wednesday, exiting its current $5.5 billion program to seek more realistic reform timelines. The move follows the August 2024 ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and persistent inflation. The request aims to recalibrate economic policy while maintaining support from international lenders during a period of political transition.
