The central bank of Australia has raised its benchmark cash rate for the second consecutive month, citing the necessity of higher borrowing costs to curb persistent inflation. Following its March policy meeting, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) announced a 25-basis-point increase, bringing the cash rate to 4.10%. This move marks a 10-month high and effectively reverses two of the three rate reductions implemented by the bank during the previous year.

The policy decision was characterized by a narrow margin, with five board members supporting the hike and four opposing it. This 5-4 split represents the most closely contested decision since the RBA began disclosing its voting records. The bank indicated that the adjustment was required as core inflation, currently at 3.4%, remains stubbornly above the official target range of 2% to 3%.

Financial markets had largely anticipated the possibility of a hike after senior RBA officials warned that the March meeting would be \"live.\" The narrowness of the board's vote suggests that future policy tightening remains a close call and will likely depend on how economic data evolves in the coming months.
