Attorneys General Warn Trump Proposal Could Freeze EV Fund
Attorneys general from 20 states say a proposal for 100% domestic EV charger parts would freeze a $5 billion fund. They claim the move is not yet feasible.
A coalition of 20 state attorneys general has warned that a Trump administration proposal to mandate 100% domestic parts for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations would effectively dismantle a $5 billion federal program. The attorneys general, representing states such as California, New York, and Michigan, argue that the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) proposal to hike "Buy America" requirements from 55% to 100% is currently impossible for manufacturers to achieve. The states contend that the move would frustrate congressional intent and impair the public interest by halting the deployment of federally funded EV chargers. According to a letter sent by the group, which includes Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, the market is not yet prepared for such a transition.
"There are currently no 100% domestically produced chargers available for purchase, there is not enough demand for 100% domestically produced chargers to justify investing in domestic production, and some critical components of the chargers are simply not produced in the United States."
