The conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran is threatening to disrupt the flow of vehicles from major Asian manufacturing hubs to the Middle East. As the geopolitical situation intensifies, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has largely ceased due to security concerns, impacting billions of dollars in automotive trade. China identifies the Middle East as its second-largest overseas market, a region of growing importance as domestic demand softens. In 2025, Chinese manufacturers exported 8.32 million cars, with 1.39 million units—roughly one-sixth of the total—shipped to Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Key players in this market include Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., BYD Company Limited, SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, Chongqing Changan Automobile Company Limited, and GEELY AUTOMOBILE HOLDINGS LT. Beyond domestic brands, Chinese joint ventures for Kia Corporation, Hyundai Motor Company, and Toyota Motor Corporation are also among the top exporters to the region. India also maintains a significant trade relationship with the Gulf, exporting $8.8 billion worth of cars in 2025, with 25% of that value directed to the Middle East. Hyundai Motor Company has the highest exposure, with half of its $1.8 billion in Indian exports going to the region. Toyota Motor Corporation similarly saw two-thirds of its $470 million in Indian exports head to Middle Eastern markets. Other notable exporters from India include Maruti Suzuki India Limited, which sent $457 million in vehicles to the region, and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., whose $318 million in regional exports accounted for 38% of its total Indian output. In South Korea, automotive exports reached a record $72 billion last year, with $5.3 billion in vehicles sent to the Middle East. Hyundai Motor Company reported that 8% of its total wholesale sales, or about 317,000 units, were shipped to the Middle East and Africa combined, while Kia Corporation reported a similar 8% allocation of its 3.1 million wholesale units. Japan has also felt the impact of logistical disruptions. Toyota Motor Corporation exported 320,699 vehicles from Japan to the Middle East in 2025, representing 15% of its total export volume. However, the automaker is expected to reduce production by nearly 40,000 units for these markets due to the ongoing regional instability.
