Allianz buys stake in German grid operator Amprion
Allianz Global Investors is buying a stake in Amprion from Talanx to fund grid upgrades. The deal supports Germany's transition to renewable energy sources.
The asset management division of Allianz SE has agreed to acquire a stake in the electricity transmission system operator Amprion. This transaction involves the insurer Talanx AG and is designed to support the funding of extensive power grid upgrades as Germany continues its transition toward renewable energy. In a joint announcement, Allianz Global Investors and Talanx AG stated their commitment to investing significant capital into the development of the nation's second-largest electricity network. Under the terms of the agreement, the Allianz European Infrastructure Fund II will acquire an indirect interest from Talanx AG. Talanx AG is currently a member of the M31 consortium, which maintains a 74.9% controlling stake in Amprion. The involved parties have chosen not to reveal the specific financial terms or the exact size of the deal. The move follows a signal from Talanx AG last week regarding its intention to reduce its holding in the grid operator. Recent reports suggested that several major owners of Amprion were exploring the possibility of bringing in new investors to help manage the growing financial demands of the energy sector. The increasing reliance on intermittent energy sources, such as wind and solar power, has necessitated massive capital expenditures for network operators across Europe. Amprion has outlined an ambitious investment strategy, aiming to deploy more than 36 billion euros by 2029 to ensure the grid can handle the evolving energy landscape.
