Alibaba Revenue Grows 1.7 Percent and Misses Estimates
Alibaba reported quarterly revenue of 284.84 billion yuan as it missed analyst estimates. Heavy spending on delivery and promotions failed to spur demand.
Alibaba Group Holding Limited reported a 1.7% increase in its fourth-quarter revenue on Thursday, falling short of market expectations. The e-commerce giant, based in China, faced challenges as significant investments in one-hour delivery services and aggressive promotional campaigns during the peak shopping season failed to generate the anticipated surge in consumer demand. The company recorded revenue of 284.84 billion yuan ($41.28 billion) for the three-month period ending in December. This figure was lower than the 290.7 billion yuan average estimate projected by 21 analysts, according to data compiled by LSEG. The results highlight the pressure on the e-commerce sector as companies navigate a competitive landscape. Despite the modest growth, the failure to meet analyst targets underscores the difficulty in converting high operational spending into top-line revenue growth in the current economic climate.
