ABC calls FCC equal time order against The View invalid
ABC told the FCC that orders subjecting The View to equal time rules are invalid. The network says the move exceeds agency authority and chills free speech.
Walt Disney-owned ABC challenged a federal order on May 8 that subjects its talk show "The View" to political equal-time rules. The network argued the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandate is invalid and violates free speech rights. The filing marks an escalation in the legal battle between the broadcaster and the Trump administration over media regulation.
### ABC Defends News Status The FCC launched an investigation in February into whether "The View" violated rules requiring equal airtime for political candidates. This probe followed an appearance by Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico. The agency stated that daytime and late-night talk shows no longer qualify as "bona fide news programs" exempt from the 1930s-era regulation.
