Global equity markets trended upward on Wednesday as investors found optimism in the potential for renewed diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran. The MSCI All-Country World Index rose by 0.1%, nearing its record peak and marking its ninth consecutive session of gains. This positive sentiment was bolstered by comments suggesting that peace talks could resume shortly, potentially bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The energy sector responded to the diplomatic signals with Brent Crude Oil futures trading at $96.04 per barrel. Although prices saw a modest 1.3% increase on Wednesday, they remained well below the $100 threshold after a sharp decline in the previous session. Analysts noted that the possibility of a diplomatic resolution has helped ease fears of a significant stagflationary shock to the global economy. In Europe, market performance was more restrained. Indices in France saw the most significant pressure, falling 0.6%. A major contributor to this decline was HERMES INTERNATIONAL, which saw its share price plunge by more than 13%. The luxury goods manufacturer reported that its first-quarter sales had been adversely affected by the geopolitical instability. The currency markets reflected a decrease in safe-haven demand, leaving the dollar near six-week lows. The EUR/USD pair rose to $1.177, while GBP/USD was recorded at $1.355. Derek Halpenny, an analyst at MUFG, commented on the currency's recent performance: > The failure of the U.S. dollar to advance as much as we expected since the start of the conflict and the emerging signs of increased appetite for selling is an indication of the poor fundamental backdrop for the dollar ahead of the start of the conflict. Economic data from the United Kingdom and other major economies remained a focal point for traders. In the Asian region, Japan saw the Nikkei index climb 0.9%, while the KOSPI in South Korea jumped by 3%. These gains came despite data from China showing a sharp slowdown in exports for March, as high energy costs and the conflict dampened global demand. On Wall Street, futures remained largely unchanged following a strong rally on Tuesday. Encouraging producer inflation data in the American market helped to temper concerns regarding war-driven price increases. However, the International Monetary Fund has cautioned that the global economy remains at risk of recession if the conflict in the Middle East escalates further.
