World Bank Provides $350 Million for SA Infrastructure
The World Bank approved $350 million for a South African credit facility. It aims to attract $10 billion in private capital for power grid expansion.
The World Bank has approved a $350 million financing package for South Africa to establish a new credit guarantee facility designed to catalyze private investment in critical infrastructure, specifically targeting the expansion of the national power transmission grid. This funding, provided by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, is intended to operationalize a Credit Guarantee Vehicle that seeks to mobilize approximately $10 billion in capital from private investors, commercial lenders, and institutional investors over a 10-year period.
The initiative is a cornerstone of the government's broader economic reform agenda. South Africa is currently seeking significant private sector involvement to fund the construction of thousands of kilometers of new power lines and enhanced transformer capacity. These upgrades are essential for the country to recover from more than a decade of persistent power cuts that have constrained industrial output and economic growth.
