Wisconsin Senate Leader May Revive Stalled Tax Relief Bill
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu indicated the chamber could reconvene to pass a bipartisan tax relief and school funding package if two additional senators support the measure. The proposal seeks to utilize 1.8 billion dollars of the state surplus for rebate checks and property tax cuts.
The United States state of Wisconsin could revive a $1.8B tax relief and school funding package if two additional senators support the measure. The deal, negotiated by Democratic Governor Tony Evers and Republican leaders, previously failed in the Senate after three Republicans joined all 15 Democrats in opposition. Passing the bill would deploy nearly 72% of the state's projected $2.5B surplus to lower property taxes and fund special education.
### Public Support Meets Legislative Gridlock Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu said on Thursday afternoon that the chamber is open to reconvening if the vote count shifts. A Marquette University Law School poll showed 80% of Wisconsin adults support the compromise, which includes rebate checks and the elimination of taxes on overtime and tips.
