Trump suggests a deal with Cuba could be done easily
The White House confirmed talks with Cuba as President Trump suggested a deal is possible. Havana seeks relief from a severe economic crisis and fuel shortages.
The United States has signaled that a diplomatic agreement with Cuba could be achieved with ease, according to recent statements from the White House. President Donald Trump has signaled that the administration is currently in communication with Cuban leadership, reiterating his belief that a deal is feasible if both sides agree to terms. This development follows confirmation from Havana that formal negotiations are currently underway.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel stated that his government has opened a dialogue with Washington to address long-standing bilateral differences. The push for negotiations comes as the island nation grapples with a severe economic crisis, largely driven by an oil blockade.
"negotiations have been aimed at finding solutions through dialogue to the bilateral differences we have between the two nations."
The economic situation in the Caribbean nation has worsened since the capture of Nicolas Maduro, the president of Venezuela in January, which deprived Cuba of its primary foreign benefactor. In response, the Trump administration has cut off oil shipments and threatened further tariffs on nations assisting the island. Additionally, Mexico has also reportedly stopped providing oil to the country, leaving the population to face daily electricity blackouts and shortages of fuel and medicine.
A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized the president's perspective on the ongoing situation.
"As the President stated, we are talking to Cuba, whose leaders should make a deal, which he believes would be very easily made."
While Trump has suggested the possibility of a \"friendly takeover,\" the administration remains critical of the current Cuban leadership. The official described the state of the nation as failing, particularly after losing regional energy support.
"Cuba is a failing nation whose rulers have had a major setback with the loss of support from Venezuela and with Mexico ceasing to send them oil."
The dialogue continues as the international community watches for signs of a definitive shift in U.S.-Cuba relations.
