Volvo Wins US Approval to Import Connected Technology Cars
Volvo Cars received U.S. approval to sell connected vehicles despite rules targeting Chinese software. The firm will now proceed with its American growth plans.
Volvo Car AB-B secured United States government approval to continue selling and importing connected vehicles despite strict new software regulations. The authorization bypasses a January 2025 federal ban on Chinese-developed vehicle software that targeted firms with majority ownership from China. This decision preserves the automaker’s access to its second-largest market after sales there fell 2.9% from 2024.
### Regulatory Relief for Geely-Owned Brands The U.S. Department of Commerce granted the specific authorization following discussions regarding governance and data security. Volvo, which is majority-owned by Geely Holding, faced exclusion under rules that took effect in March 2026 for the 2027 model year. The company stated the permit allows it to maintain growth plans and current import structures.
