Volkswagen overtakes Tesla as the top electric vehicle seller in Europe

Volkswagen has overtaken Tesla, Inc. TSLA as the top seller of fully-electric cars in the European fully-electric vehicle market for the full year of 2025. According to data released by JATO Dynamics, Volkswagen registered 274,278 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) across the region, surpassing the 236,357 units sold by the US US based automaker led by Elon Musk elon musk.

The shift in market leadership follows a year of divergent sales trajectories for the two companies. Volkswagen saw its BEV sales rise by 56% in 2025, a growth trend led by the introduction of its new ID.7 model. In contrast, registrations for Tesla, Inc. TSLA fell by 27% during the same period. These full-year figures signal a significant reordering of competitive leadership within the European fully-electric vehicle market.
