Vietnam trade surplus with US grows as imports from China reach record levels

Vietnam's trade surplus with the US grew nearly 30 percent in January while imports from China hit a record high. Total imports rose to nearly $45 billion.

Vietnam's VNVN trade surplus with the United States USUS rose by nearly 30 percent year-on-year in January to reach $12 billion, according to a report from Vietnam's statistics office released on February 6, 2026. The report attributes the expanded surplus to higher exports, with shipments to the United States USUS reaching $13.9 billion during the month. Vietnamese VNVN exporters have seen increased activity even as the broader trade environment remains under scrutiny.
