United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will meet with top leaders in Japan during a three-day visit starting Monday, May 12. The trip includes individual talks with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, and Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda. These high-level discussions signal a coordinated effort to stabilize the yen and address broader economic security concerns.
### Addressing the Yen and Economic Security Bessent is expected to focus on curbing speculative selling of the yen, which has recently pressured Japanese household costs. The currency pair USD/JPY strengthened from 157.8 to 155 in midday holiday trade on Wednesday. According to people familiar with the matter, the agenda also covers rare earths, energy procurement, and the conflict in Iran.
