US Treasury Proposes Ban on Swiss MBaer Merchant Bank
US Treasury proposed blocking MBaer Bank from the financial system today. The firm allegedly funneled over $100 million for illicit actors tied to Iran and Russia.
The United States Treasury Department has proposed a rule that would sever the access of a bank based in Switzerland to the domestic financial system. The measure targets MBaer Merchant Bank AG due to its alleged role in supporting illicit actors associated with Iran and Russia. Treasury officials claim that the bank and its employees facilitated corruption involving Russian money laundering, as well as financing for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its Quds Force.

According to the Treasury, the institution has funneled substantial sums through American financial channels on behalf of sanctioned entities.
"MBaer has funneled over a hundred million dollars through the U.S. financial system on behalf of illicit actors tied to Iran and Russia, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement."
The department issued a warning to the global banking community regarding the enforcement of financial regulations and the protection of the U.S. market.
"Banks should be on notice that the U.S. Treasury will aggressively protect the integrity of the U.S. financial system using the full force of our authorities."
This proposed rule, if finalized, would effectively isolate the Swiss institution from the global dollar-clearing system, preventing it from maintaining correspondent accounts in the United States.
