The United States Postal Service (USPS) has proposed a price increase for first-class mail stamps, raising the cost from 78 cents to 82 cents starting July 12. This adjustment, which is subject to approval by the Postal Regulatory Commission, would result in an overall 4.8% increase in mailing service prices. The agency has warned that without significant intervention, it could face a total depletion of its cash reserves as early as February. This financial pressure follows a reported quarterly loss of $1.25 billion in February, contributing to a cumulative net loss of $118 billion since 2007. The decline is largely driven by the falling volume of first-class mail, the agency's most profitable product, which has dropped to its lowest levels since the late 1960s. Earlier this week, the Postal Regulatory Commission approved a temporary 8% price hike for priority mail and package deliveries, scheduled to take effect on April 26. This surcharge is designed to address rising fuel and transportation costs and is expected to remain in place through January 17. Additionally, the commission authorized a plan for the USPS to suspend employer pension contributions starting this Friday. This measure is projected to conserve $200 million every two weeks, potentially saving the agency $2.5 billion by September 30. In a strategic move to bolster revenue, the USPS has secured an agreement with AMAZON.COM INC. The partnership involves the retailer utilizing the postal service for at least 1 billion packages annually, which accounts for approximately 80% of its volume from the previous year. Postmaster General David Steiner has also enlisted restructuring advisers to help navigate the agency's financial difficulties. Steiner has expressed a desire to raise prices beyond the current levels, suggesting that American consumers might be willing to pay 90 or 95 cents per letter, noting that stamp prices in many other parts of the world exceed $2.
