Justice Department targets egg producers in antitrust case
The Justice Department is preparing an antitrust suit against major egg producers for price coordination. Cal-Maine Foods shares fell following the report.
The Department of Justice in the United States is reportedly preparing an antitrust lawsuit against several of the nation's largest egg producers. The move follows allegations of coordinated price-fixing within the industry, aimed at stabilizing or inflating costs.

The investigation focuses on CAL-MAINE FOODS INC and the privately held Versova. According to reports, the government alleges that these companies utilized an industry price-benchmarking service to align their pricing strategies. Such coordination, if proven, would constitute a violation of federal antitrust laws designed to ensure fair competition.
Market reaction to the news was swift, with shares of Cal-Maine Foods falling nearly 5% in extended trading on Friday. At this stage, neither Cal-Maine Foods nor Versova has issued a formal response to the reports. The Justice Department has also declined to provide further details as the case develops.
