US Investors Seek Policy Stability After Hungary Election
AmCham members seek a predictable business environment under Peter Magyar. The group hopes for euro adoption and the restoration of fiscal policy credibility.
Investors from the United States are calling for a return to predictable policymaking in Hungary following the landslide victory of opposition leader Peter Magyar. The shift in leadership marks a potential end to years of abrupt legislative changes and ad hoc economic measures that characterized the tenure of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The American Chamber of Commerce, representing over 300 major international investors, has voiced its support for a more stable business environment. The group includes prominent entities such as BLACKROCK INC, INTL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP, MICROSOFT CORP, and NOVARTIS AG-REG. AmCham President Akos Janza noted that the rule of law is essential for maintaining investor confidence. > Capital hates one thing more than tax, and that is unpredictability. Magyar, who is scheduled to take office on May 9, campaigned on a platform of restoring pro-European policies and securing the release of frozen European Union funds to stimulate the economy. His proposal to adopt the euro is seen as a way to reduce exchange rate volatility and lower the costs of doing business. The previous administration's use of a sweeping parliamentary majority to push through laws without consultation had previously impacted the nation's credit standing. S&P GLOBAL INC had lowered the country's credit outlook to negative, citing a reduction in policy predictability due to weakened institutional checks and balances. Fitch Ratings also highlighted the necessity for the incoming government to rebuild fiscal credibility after frequent revisions to debt reduction targets. The market has reacted positively to the political transition, with the EUR/HUF pair reflecting a significant gain for the forint, which reached four-year highs. Janza indicated that the planned anti-corruption drive and the creation of standalone ministries for healthcare and education are moves that the investment community strongly supports. > It is absolutely important for us and for our member companies that the rule of law becomes the single driving framework in the economy.
