US firm Virtus Minerals overstated its mining experience
Reuters found Virtus Minerals misrepresented its track record in the Congo. The firm claimed to operate a processing plant that has remained idle since 2012.
A prominent firm from the United States that is central to efforts to secure critical minerals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reportedly overstated its mining experience. Investigations by Reuters indicate that Virtus, which recently acquired mines from Chemaf for $30 million, claimed a track record in the region based on operating a copper and cobalt processing facility that has actually been idle for over a decade.
The acquisition marks the first major physical investment under a strategic minerals partnership signed last year. Through this agreement, Washington aims to facilitate investment in the Congolese mining sector to gain preferential access to essential minerals, seeking to challenge the long-standing dominance of China in the industry.
