Judge tosses Trump lawsuit over Boston sanctuary law
A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit by the Trump administration against Boston's sanctuary law. The ruling found the government lacked legal standing in the case.
A federal judge dismissed a United States Department of Justice lawsuit challenging Boston's "sanctuary" immigration law. The ruling marks the fifth legal defeat for the administration in cases against sanctuary jurisdictions. Judge Leo Sorokin found the federal government lacked legal standing to pursue the case.
### Legal Standing and State Precedent U.S. District Judge Leo Sorokin ruled that the federal government lacked the legal grounds to pursue the case against the Boston Trust Act. The lawsuit, filed in September, challenged the city and Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu over a 2014 ordinance that prohibits the Boston Police Department from sharing personal information or detaining migrants for civil immigration enforcement. Sorokin noted the administration failed to show how a favorable ruling would remedy the alleged harms to federal enforcement.
