Consumer sentiment in the United States experienced a decline during the early weeks of March, as escalating conflict in the Middle East drove up energy costs and fueled concerns regarding household finances. According to the University of Michigan’s Surveys of Consumers, the Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to 55.5 this month, down from a final reading of 56.6 in February. While the figure remained slightly above the 55.0 level predicted by economists, the downward trend highlights the immediate impact of geopolitical instability on domestic outlooks. The survey period, which spanned from February 17 to March 9, captured the onset of military actions involving Israel and Iran. This conflict has significantly impacted global oil markets, with domestic gasoline prices surging more than 21% to an average of $3.63 per gallon since the hostilities began. The sharp rise in fuel costs has weighed heavily on consumer expectations, particularly as global industrial entities like Oiles Corporation monitor the ripple effects of energy price volatility on manufacturing and consumer demand.Joanne Hsu, the director of the Surveys of Consumers, noted that the timing of the military action was a decisive factor in the month's data.> Interviews completed prior to the military action in Iran showed an improvement in sentiment from last month, but lower readings seen during the nine days thereafter completely erased those initial gains. The decline in confidence was observed across a broad demographic spectrum, with households of various income levels, ages, and political affiliations reporting a 7.5% national decrease in expectations for their personal finances. Despite these concerns, inflation expectations remained relatively stable. The survey’s measure for year-ahead inflation was unchanged at 3.4%, while the five-year outlook saw a marginal dip to 3.2% from the previous month’s 3.3%.
