US and China Oppose Shipping Tolls in Strait of Hormuz
U.S. and Chinese officials agree that no country can charge tolls in the Strait of Hormuz. This consensus aims to pressure Iran to reopen the vital trade route.
The United States and China agreed that no nation may levy shipping tolls in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that Iran closed on February 28, blocking 20% of global oil and gas supply.
State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Secretary of State Marco Rubio reached the agreement during an April phone call. Both officials stated that no organization can charge fees for passage through international waterways. This alignment comes as both nations prepare for a high-stakes summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping later this week.
