United States pays 160 million dollars toward multibillion dollar debt owed to United Nations

The United States paid a small fraction of its $4 billion debt to the UN recently. President Trump also held his first Board of Peace meeting Thursday.

The United States USUS has made a partial payment of approximately $160 million to the United Nations, a move that reduces its outstanding arrears to the U.N. regular budget. This payment is part of a larger obligation totaling more than $4 billion that the country currently owes to the international body. As of the start of February, the amount specifically owed to the U.N. regular budget was $2.19 billion, alongside other debts related to U.N. peacekeeping missions and U.N. tribunals.
This financial development coincides with a period of significant institutional change under the Trump administration. President Donald Trump recently hosted the first meeting of the Board of Peace, marking the launch of a new diplomatic initiative. At the same time, the administration has implemented a series of reductions in both mandatory and voluntary funding for the United Nations and has completed withdrawals from multiple U.N. agencies.
