The United Nations is cutting over 3,000 Geneva-based jobs and vacating historic headquarters as funding from the United States and other donors dries up. When the League of Nations left the Palais Wilson in 1937, it was a global body on the verge of collapse; the UN's departure from the same building now signals a retreat from the multilateral order built after World War Two. It represents the most severe contraction in the organization's 80-year history.
