Extreme heat is pushing global agrifood systems to the brink, threatening the livelihoods and health of more than a billion people, according to a new report by the food and weather agencies of the United Nations. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned that heatwaves are becoming more frequent, intense, and prolonged, causing significant damage to crops, livestock, fisheries, and forests.
Kaveh Zahedi, head of the FAO climate change office, emphasized the severity of the situation.
