Ukraine Rail Tariff Hike Threatens Steel Sector Jobs
The UkrMetalurgProm union warned that a proposed 45% freight tariff increase by state railway Ukrzaliznytsia could lead to permanent facility closures. The steel sector faces significant losses and reduced capacity due to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
The Ukrainian steelmakers union UkrMetalurgProm warned that a proposed 45% freight tariff hike by the state railway could cost Ukraine 300,000 jobs and a reduction in GDP. The industry group stated the increase threatens to permanently shutter facilities already weakened by ongoing conflict. For investors, the move signals deepening fiscal strain on Ukraine's industrial backbone and a potential collapse in export-driven foreign currency revenues.
### Steel Sector Faces $632 Million Loss UkrMetalurgProm president Oleksandr Kalenkov said the steel sector has already realized losses of 28 billion hryvnias ($632 million). He noted that several plants are currently suspended or operating at reduced capacity. Kalenkov argued that any further increase in transportation costs would be the decisive factor pushing struggling enterprises into permanent shutdowns.
