UK Regulator Mandates Google AI Opt Out for Publishers
The Competition and Markets Authority has introduced new conduct requirements for Google to give UK publishers more control over their content. Under the digital markets regime, the tech giant must allow news organizations to opt out of AI features while ensuring proper attribution and clear links for used content.
ALPHABET INC-CL A must allow publishers in the United Kingdom to opt out of AI-powered search features under new regulatory requirements. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) imposed these rules on Wednesday to address ALPHABET INC-CL A's 90% share of the British search market. The move aims to protect publisher revenue as AI-generated overviews reduce traditional website click-through rates.
### CMA Targets AI Search Dominance The CMA designated ALPHABET INC-CL A with "strategic market status," granting the regulator power to enforce targeted transparency rules. This framework requires ALPHABET INC-CL A to provide publishers with stronger bargaining power and clearer attribution for content used in AI responses. CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell said the requirements respond to ALPHABET INC-CL A's current and future search developments.
